One of the coolest city areas we’ve ever visited, the Gothic Quarter is an older part of Barcelona that still hosts the walls of the ancient Roman fortress dating back to 400 A.D. Our hotel was situated right in the heart of it, in front of Barcelona Cathedral, which started construction in 1298.

Modern Embellishments

While the roman wall and numerous buildings date back to the middle ages and prior, much of the Gothic Quarter dates back to the 19th and 20th centuries. During the early 1900’s there was a massive restoration / tourism / area improvement project which built out the area to make it more attractive on the world stage. For example, the famous Bishop’s bridge, was actually built in the 1920’s, despite looking much older:

The Gothic Quarter really comes alive and shows its character in the evening. The lightly hilled narrow passages lined with shops and restaurants make for a really great vibe. Bustling restaurants come alive, serving Tapas and Pintxo’s. Note: If you’ve never experienced Tapas and Pintxo’s, you need to.

The Gothic Quarter is even more lively in the evenings, with a bustling nightlife and Tapas culture.
Most of the streets in the Gothic Quarter have a ton of character. Some are lined with the original roman / medieval walls, with buildings and shops seamlessly integrating into them. Everything lights up to provide a warm magical patio sort of feeling.
